Rigging and Lifting: Chain and Cable Hand Pullers and Hoists
We had a tree stump in the front , its diameter is about a bit greater than 4 feet , it had bothered us for a few years , we’ve tried chainsaw on it but nothing can go through it, lately we bought a cable puller with 4 ton capacity , together with my truck pulled the stump out like a decayed molar in an instant.
Actually cable pullers are heavy duty pulling tools and can be used to do a lot of things, sometimes you even can use it in pace of ATV Winch to save money. The cable pullers usually have 1 ton to 4 ton pulling capacity, the lifting capacity is half of the pulling, and pull reach ranges from 6′ to 12′, 4 ton puller typically has 6′ reach but extra heavy duty ones may have more than 11′ reach. People sometimes call these cable pullers “Come Along”, but come along refers to a lot of different hand tools besides cable pullers, such as chain hoists, chain pullers, hand winch, strap pullers, and more, in a word, a come along is a hand operated ratchet lever winch. What makes cable puller different is that it’s capacity can be as strong as 4 ton, or 8800lbs, it is considered heavy duty tools, while regular hand winch has 400-4000lbs capacity and mostly used to pull boat out of or lower boat into water from trailer, sometimes also called boat trailer winch. Here comes chain hoists , a.k.a chain come along, we usually see chain hoists in big warehouse and heavy machinery operation.
For stretching, pulling, lifting and lowering, cable pullers are the best choice. You can pull or release vehicles onto and from trailer respectively, to pull or tear down trees, pull big rack or shed around your house, pull the tree stumps out of somewhere , compare to electric powered winch, such as ATV winch , cable pullers are inexpensive alternatives. We made our point let’s get a real cable puller, the way to do it is to get it online, a few searches away there will be more than a few nice deals.
As far as we know, these hand tools are always ready whenever you need them, while gasoline powered tools will be out of order from time to time, and we have to take pollution into consideration when we use gasoline tools. To leave our sons and grandsons a clean earth, I prefer hand tools over power tools.
